If you’ve shopped for cannabis in Ontario, you’ve probably noticed that some products at your local dispensary never seem to appear on the OCS website. Often, that’s flow-through cannabis: in-store-only stock that licensed retailers can bring in directly, outside the standard Ontario Cannabis Store catalogue. Here’s what flow-through means, why it exists, and how to find it at our Guelph store on Scottsdale Drive.

In Ontario, the Ontario Cannabis Store (OCS) is the sole legal wholesaler, and most of what reaches store shelves is ordered through its catalogue. Flow-through is a program that lets licensed producers move certain products through the OCS system without those items being warehoused centrally or listed on ocs.ca. The product still travels through the same regulated, tracked supply chain — it simply flows through rather than sitting in the provincial catalogue.

For shoppers, the practical result is straightforward: flow-through products are available in the stores that choose to carry them, but you generally won’t find them listed for sale on the OCS website. If you only browse online, you might never know they exist.

Why does flow-through exist? Not every product fits neatly into a large, centralized catalogue. Smaller craft producers, limited batches, seasonal drops and specialty items can be difficult to list and warehouse province-wide. Flow-through gives these products a legal path to shelves. It helps craft and independent brands reach customers, and it lets retailers curate a more distinctive line-up than the standard catalogue alone would allow.

What might you find? Because selection changes often, it varies week to week — which is part of the appeal. Depending on availability, flow-through can include small-batch craft flower, unique pre-rolls, specialty concentrates or limited-release drops that aren’t part of the everyday OCS listing. Since many are limited runs, something you spot today may not be there on your next visit.

Is it the same quality? Yes. Flow-through products still come from federally licensed producers and move through the regulated Ontario supply chain. They’re tested and packaged to the same federal standards as any other legal cannabis, including the same labelling rules for THC and CBD content. The main difference is the distribution route, not the standards the product has to meet.
