Cannabis Storage: How to Keep Your Flower Fresh Longer

Good cannabis storage is one of the simplest ways to get more out of every purchase. Whether you picked up a fresh eighth from our Reserved Cannabis store on Scottsdale Drive in Guelph or stocked up for a few weeks, how you store your flower makes a real difference to its aroma, texture and overall quality. Here is a straightforward guide to keeping your cannabis fresh for longer.

Dried cannabis is a natural product, and like any plant material it changes over time. Exposure to air, light, heat and moisture gradually breaks down the compounds that give each strain its character, especially the terpenes responsible for aroma and flavour. Poorly stored flower tends to dry out, lose its scent and smoke harshly, while well-stored flower stays aromatic and pleasant far longer.

There are four things to control: light, air, temperature and humidity. Keep flower out of direct sunlight and bright indoor light, since UV is one of the biggest causes of degraded cannabis. Limit its exposure to air with a container that does not leave too much empty space above the bud. Store it somewhere cool and stable, away from windowsills, appliances and other heat sources. And aim for a relative humidity of roughly 55 to 65 per cent, because too dry makes flower crumble and too damp invites mould.

When it comes to containers, glass jars with airtight lids, such as mason jars, are a classic choice and widely available. Glass will not hold odours or affect flavour the way some plastics can, but it does let light through, so keep the jar itself in a dark cupboard or drawer. Many people add a small two-way humidity pack to the jar to hold moisture in the ideal range and take the guesswork out. The child-resistant packaging your cannabis comes in also works well in the short term if you plan to finish it within a few weeks.

A few things are worth avoiding. Skip the freezer, as freezing can make the delicate trichomes on the bud brittle so they snap off when handled. The fridge is not ideal either, thanks to temperature swings and humidity every time the door opens. Steer clear of flimsy plastic bags, which offer little protection and build up static that pulls trichomes off the flower. And hold off on grinding until just before use, since whole buds stay fresh longer than ground flower.

Other products have their own quirks. Store 510 vape cartridges upright in a cool, dark spot to help prevent leaks, keep edibles sealed and away from heat, and treat pre-rolls like flower by keeping them in an airtight tube or jar.
