Where Can You Consume Cannabis in Ontario? A Simple Guide to the Rules

If you are wondering where you can consume cannabis in Ontario, the short answer is that the rules are stricter than many people expect. Buying cannabis at a licensed store is the easy part; knowing where it is actually allowed to be used takes a little more thought. This plain-language guide covers the basics so you can enjoy your purchase responsibly and stay on the right side of the rules.

Your Home Is the Simplest Option

For most adults, a private residence is the most straightforward place to consume cannabis. That generally includes the outdoor space that belongs to your home, such as a yard or balcony. Keep in mind that being allowed by provincial law does not override your own living situation, so check what your household and neighbours are comfortable with.

It also helps to know how much you can carry. Adults 19 and older may possess up to 30 grams of dried cannabis, or its equivalent in other products, in public. Keeping purchases in their original, labelled packaging makes it easy to show exactly what you have if you are ever asked.

Renters, Condos and Landlords

If you rent or live in a condo, the building’s own rules matter. Landlords and condo corporations can set smoke-free or vape-free policies, and these can apply to units, balconies and shared areas. Read your lease or condo declaration, and ask your landlord or property manager if you are unsure. Smoke-free options like edibles and beverages are an easy way around many of these restrictions.

If you are not sure whether a product format fits your building, ask. Vapes produce less odour than flower, and edibles, beverages and capsules produce none, which can make life easier in shared buildings.

Public Places: What Is Off Limits

Ontario allows cannabis use in some public places, but there are many exceptions. Places where consumption is generally not permitted include:

  • Schools, school grounds and child care centres, plus the public areas near them

  • Children’s playgrounds and public areas around them

  • Hospitals and certain care facilities

  • Restaurant and bar patios

  • Indoor common areas of apartment buildings and condos

  • Workplaces and enclosed public spaces

Municipalities can also add their own limits, and some parks and public areas are posted. When you see a no-smoking or no-vaping sign, treat it as covering cannabis too.

Because rules differ for each type of space, a quick check before you light up or vape saves a lot of trouble. When in doubt, wait until you are somewhere clearly permitted, such as at home.

Never in a Vehicle

Cannabis cannot be consumed in a car, boat or other vehicle, including when it is parked. Passengers are included. Cannabis you are carrying should also be sealed and stored out of reach of the driver. Impaired driving is a serious offence, so plan ahead with a designated driver, a taxi or a rideshare.

Travelling to a friend’s place or a gathering? Ask the host first, since private property owners can set their own rules, and plan your ride home before the evening begins.

Plan Ahead and Be a Good Neighbour

Even where consumption is allowed, courtesy goes a long way. Think about smell, smoke drifting toward neighbours, and children or pets nearby. Store cannabis securely at home and keep it in its original packaging when you are out. If you are new to shopping, our first-time dispensary guide explains what to expect at the counter.
